Re: Men's Shoelaces

My wife always tells me to tie the laces TWICE, to prevent them coming loose. Seems to work. What a wise woman!!

My wife tells me to tie my shoe laces together, to prevent me from moving about the house and making a mess

Anyway, had a look on Debretts for further guidance and found this "– Highly polished or patent black lace-up shoes, worn with black laces (traditionally ribbon) and black socks." for white tie dress. What the deuce

Dex - that is quite normal for formal occasions. 'White tie' implies tails and appropriate shoes.

It's the ribbon laces that I'd not heard of. Guess I don't mix in the right circles

I'm not too sure what the 'girl's way' is exactly! Do you have a diagram?

I have a new pair of trainers, bought in Belgium whilst we were away recently. Only £30 - end of line. The last ones in the shop and, fortunately, my size.

Anyway, the laces (however they are arranged) don't slip easily through the holes (ooer, missus), so I have sent off for some of those elastic laces which, I hope, will effectively convert them to 'slip ons'.

Much easier than messing about with laces which inevitably come undone anyway.

On which subject, some time ago I read about some research done in America regarding tying shoe laces (they research anything these days!), and they realised that the way we (well, certainly I) tie our laces results in a granny knot, which is probably why they come undone!

I now purposely do the first 'over and under' the opposite way, then tie the bow the usual way, so creating a reef knot. They never come undone now.

Surely that diagram simply shows 2 different ways of lacing shoes not whether its male or female!

Different ways of lacing hark back to the dress shoe and the brogue thats all

Re: Men's Shoelaces

Apparently there are about twenty different ways to tie your laces, one for each persuasion perhaps?

Sorry, my fault. I didn't read through all the pages.

I've never thought about 'male' and 'female', but I now recall when in the RAF they explained that the 'male' method makes it easier and quicker to cut through laces to remove the boot in case of foot injury. Perhaps that's it.
