Re: Chinese Coronavirus

Australia is expected to extend its China travel ban for another week amid ongoing fears over the spread of the coronavirus, locking out hundreds of thousands of students and tourists from entering the country.

The move, which will be debated by cabinet's national security committee on Thursday or Friday, is set to compound the economic impact of the virus and frustrate the Chinese government as it looks to bring the fall-out from the virus under control.

The extension is expected to last another week from Saturday, taking the time of the travel ban out to a month and preventing all-non Australian residents travelling from China from entering the country until February 29.

The escalation comes as all but 15 of the 200 Australians stranded for two weeks on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship are expected to be evacuated from the vessel in Yokohama, Japan, by 6pm on Wednesday after Australian health officers tested hundreds of Australians on the ship.

Qantas flight QF6302 will pick up the passengers at 1am in Tokyo. Accompanied by doctors, they will be flown to Howard Springs mining camp outside Darwin.

Yes, looking at your figures Omah deaths have risen, as would be
expected, but new cases have almost levelled off and are
definitely not going exponential . But this does not mean the crisis
is over yet! Precautions still need to be taken untill no new cases
at all are reported for a while!

The evacuation will leave the 100 Australian residents in Hubei, the centre of the outbreak, as the only remaining Australians in a high-risk coronavirus zone.
Presumably, they have to be left to their fate .....

79 new cases on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan. So far, a total of 621 infected people were found among 3,011 passengers and crew members tested (21% infection rate) out of 3,711 total people on the ship.
That almost certain to mean new cases amongst those who have been evacuated and those left on board .....

I am amazed the powers that be in Japan are now allowing those who tested negative for the virus but might still be in the incubation period to just walk away from the cruise ship

''Hundreds of passengers who tested negative for the new coronavirus have begun leaving a quarantined cruise ship in Japan amid heavy criticism over the country's handling of the outbreak.''

It would be worse to leave them on board:

Kentaro Iwata, professor at the infectious diseases division of Japan's Kobe University, described the situation on board as "completely inadequate in terms of infection control".

After visiting the ship, Prof Iwata posted a video to YouTube stating that the quarantine measures he witnessed failed to separate the infected from the healthy.

The expert said he was more afraid of catching the virus on board than he had been working in the field in Africa during the Ebola epidemic.
At least, the evacuated passengers can be quarantined and checked more effectively in their home countries.

However, the crew, AFAIK, are still living under less than satisfactory conditions - they don't have individual cabins and share sleeping quarters .....
