My Plums Have Red Maggots In Them. What Can I Do In The Future?

I have two Victoria Plum trees. One has loads of plums on it, the other only a few.

Nearly all the plums on the tree with lots of plums seem to have a red maggot/maggots in them. The tree with less plums on it, have no maggots in them.

I read that these red maggots are moths but l wondered if anyone can advise me what to do next year to avoid the plums being infested.

Thank You, if you can.

I've had a quick Google and really the only thing you can do is spray.

This article says (at the bottom) to pick up and destroy infected fruit and windfalls and also to lightly hoe the ground under the tree to stop the caterpillars pupating and re-infecting next year.

Try picking them just before they get ripe and then ripen them at home.

Also ways works for me.

Shouldn't this be in the Health section?

Seriously though, what a shame. I love picking plums straight off a tree.

Try the sticky bands tied around the trunk. Stops bugs climbing up but follow the instructions on the pack for best time of year.

I seem to remember my Granddad used to paint something on. Can't remember what it was though.

Re: My Plums Have Red Maggots In Them. What Can I Do In The Future?

The plum sawfly attacks when the tree blossoms and has to be sprayed against at blossom drop, then the plum moth comes along early summer and lays it's eggs into the developing fruit which the maggots then burrow into and feed on. They say the best form of defence against this is feramone traps but really they are less than effective. Personally I've given up and taken my plum trees out all except an old greengage tree, which again has no fruit worth eating this year so I doubt that even that will survive the chain saw for another season...
