Re: Home made dog biscuits

Thanks Julie.

Here's one I posted ages ago when we had a thread about dog treats.

Sweet Potato Treats

I have just made a load of Sweet Potato treats for my dogs, they love 'em.

Here goes incase anyone fancies trying them on their pooches:

Set oven at 120 c

Some sweet Potatoes. (I used 4 smallish ones, but you might only want one if you only have one dog).

Method:

Scrub, then just lice them up, skin and all, into about third of an inch thick slices. Mine might be a tad thicker.

Arrange them onto some baking parchment and bake in this very gentle heat for about 3 hours. It is really to dry them out more than cook them.

Turn over half way through cooking.

That's all there is to it.
They will keep in an airtight box in the fridge for up to 3 weeks, or you can freeze them, though I never have.

Mine luv 'em.

Mixed and rolled or shaped anyway you want.

Dipped in flour and egg and rolled in gluten free porridge oats.

Couple of hours low oven temp.

My two love them and they help with excess wind it seems too.
Sounds good. Might have some myself...
What breed is your dog?

Ours just get regular dog food and plain baked sweet potato slices as an occasional treat. He needs to lose weight so nothing fancy for him.

One more, and a really simeple one with only 3 ingredients:

These will go down really well if your dog likes fish.

I personally use Buckwheat flour for these. It is a gluten-free grain and said to help cleanse the intestines.
(I have also used Spelt flour).

Here goes:

Fishy Treats

1 x 200 g tin of either Salmon or Tuna in oil

1 x beaten egg (large)

100 g (4 oz) flour (preferably Buckwheat)

Method

Heat oven to 180 C (Gas 4) and lightly grease a baking sheet.

Empty the fish and it's oil into a bowl and flake with a fork.
Add the beaten egg and stir well to combine.

Add the flour to the mixture and mix together until you have a lumpy dough.
You can either roll this out and cut shapes with your pastry cutters ( make them about 1/4" thick), or you can pick up small pieces of dough and roll them into little balls.

Place the shapes on a baking tray. (If I've had made balls, I flatten them with the back of a floured spoon at this stage, but it's just choice).

Bake in the oven for 20 mins. (I turn mine over half way).

They will keep in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Don't keep them longer as they have no chemical preservatives remember.

Re: Home made dog biscuits

Please, please be very careful if you ever use recipes with Peanut Butter in them.

Read the label first, and if it contains XYLITOL (E 967) or Propylene Glycol . . don't touch it.

This is often used as a sweetener and is highly toxic to dogs.

Hey Julie. Do I cook the spuds first and let it cool before using?
Also it says bake a couple of hours on low?

How low are you suggesting cause a couple of hours I’d think these would be burned to a crisp.

If these are cookie cutter biscuits, how are they rolled in oats?
Doesn’t that interfere with them laying flat on the cookie sheet?
I just put oats on the work top and roll the dough around in that, and I have a fan oven I put on just below the lowest temperature on the dial. Blimey I'm no help am I chuck it in no temperature on the dial

Thanks mups I make my own it's pretty easy in a food processor to make nut butters and that way they don't get the salt they put in jars of the stuff. It doesn't keep very well but it's worth doing for our furry friends I think.

Re: Home made dog biscuits

Hi Julie...I too have a great recipe for dog treats but, I'll not post it here as there's a lot of ingredients...and you've plenty of recipes posted here already.

I've been making this recipe for many, many years and had no complaints as of yet. I get the special cello doggie bags from The Bulk Store and do them up for Christmas in all different shapes and sizes.

Once baked...mine have to stay in the fridge, because of course they're no preservatives in them...

All of the doggies in my family receive them for Christmas from Santa...
