Trees

You know they tell you to plant a tree to save the planet etc.
Well, if the tree already exists how does that make any difference if you plant it or leave it where it is?

They mean plant a new young sapling Tessa, which will
grow and absorb CO2 as it grows!

But, if it's grown in the ground won't it do the same where it is? Does it matter where you plant it to grow?

No Tessa it does not matter where it grows!
We just need MORE trees period!
So you can plant your trees wherever they allow you to !
Obviously the bigger the tree the more carbon it stores!

Wouldn't it nice if every single tree chopped down, destroyed, or diseased was replaced by a couple more.

I get your question Tess.

We often see the Queen or politicians 'planting a tree' but in fact, it has already been planted.... just moved to somewhere else. Really, they should be planting a seed.

That should be the policy Mups, but unfortunately its only
practised on cmmercial plantations on a large scale!
For the general public to do this will require legistration to
get the present owners of large tracts of land to release
some of it for replanting purposes? This will prove difficult
I believe for obvious reasons?
I think the gov promoted a scheme to reforest fairly large
areas of the yorkshire moors but have heard anything further
on this?
We must not let the fact that it takes a couple of decades
to establish a tree deter us from attempting to reforest uk!

Allthough they sometimes use quite large trees for replanting
LD, these trees have been grown in a contained manner
Which makes them easier to transplant, more or less grown
in a pot!
This is not economically viable on a large scale, the only
way really is by using seedlings, as they do in plantations
at the moment!

Glad someone gets it.
I've got two fruit trees in pots, I don't know if I should plant them out or pot them on.
If I disturb them either way they might die.

I agree every tree chopped down should be replaced but, it takes years to grow a tree from seed.
If you tried to replace the Rain Forest trees that have been destroyed it would take years, probably hundreds.
I think to avoid changing the climate you would need to plant trees exactly where they were.

I suppose as Donkeyman says, when they are planted in the ground, they grow to their full potential wheas in a pot or container, they are restrained.
