It may well be Aster but cannot be certain the leafing is very similar. It definetly does not look like any weed I know of.

I'd go with asters too, or rudbeckia, perennial phlox or even himalayan balsam (in which case I'd burn them).
Would have to be a perennial to have old growth left on it.
Let us know what they turn into Art!

I spent about an hour yesterday trying to identify your plant Art but couldn't come up with anything conclusive. The way the leaves grow from the base look a bit like a lily of some sort but more like a peace lily. But then a peace lily doesn't have serrated leaves? I dunno!

I have had that growing in my garden, from bird seed, it's a pretty plant & so are the flowers.

TessA and Longfellow, I think you are both right regarding my mystery plants!
Here is a pic of them in flower for the first time and l did see similar in a garden centre the other day. They were labelled ‘Asters’.
Thank You all for posting your thoughts, even though it was May last year!

Ah, so they were Asters. They look lovely Art. .......I just had weeds.
