They are unique as well as new to the Portland Zoo.

Re: Caracal in Waiting

I've just noticed what chunky legs they have for a member of the cat family...

Yes, rather like they're wearing knee-high boots! Remarkably lovely cats aren't they?

They are fascinating. On a cute side note their exhibit is brand new, only open to the public for a week. The first time I saw them I notice that the lion habitat is directly across from the new Caracal habitat. You should have seen the two lionesses with their noses smashed against the Plexiglas window trying to watch those pesky Caracal kittens hopping around. They were really hyper.

I can imagine the lionesses at the window would make quite a good photo too!

How tall are the Caracals?

About the same as a small dog, like a Beagle. While the two lionesses were pinned to the window a little 3 year old boy was between them on the other side of that Plexiglas. His mother was snapping away with her camera. It was a special shot. The lionesses are huge when you get within two feet of their face.

Re: Caracal in Waiting

I should try to get to the Toronto Zoo again... looks like they've had these lovely cats since 1989.
