National Insurance row over staff contributions

The worker 'dismissed' in this article should have sought determination from Inland Revenue of the employment status. Many alleged 'self-employed' are no such thing but are employees and there are tests to prove the issue.

There certainly are, this self employment thing is a big con trick. I got involved in it 30 odd years ago and you are between a rock and a hard place if all you have to offer is your labour.
I never had a major problem when I was contracting, but I was very careful who I worked for. If I recall correctly, you are counted as being employed direct if you work for the same company for more than 13 consecutive weeks.

Totally agree. I was caught in this trap by a supposedly very reputable charity in the late 1980s and was forced by them to class myself as "self employed" when I was actually nothing of the sort.

Lots of building and construction workers are conned into this.

Self employment lark destroyed the milk delivery business, milkmen left in droves owing thousands.
