Has Brexit destroyed democracy

Has Brexit destroyed democracy or have we never really had democracy in UK.The current events in Westminster have exposed a blatant disregard for a peoples vote that was actually requested by parliament, and was voted on by the largest ever voter turnout. The people voted ,the majority of MPs disagreed with the people ,who the MPs are supposed to represent, and then proceeded to work to alter the result by all and any means possible and even impossible.lt is clear something is wrong. The question now is,has the system always been like this?Has it always been a sham?Having returned to UK 4 yrs ago after 40 yrs away l saw the end of Cameron's reign and the antics l. observed made me think it was all an act and not real, subsequent events have confirmed my opinion that parliament only pays lip service to the voters and democracy.Any other views on this or am l paranoid? Re: Has Brexit destroyed democracy

The UK does not have a government that is elected by a democratic system.

To move towards a true democracy will require some form of proportional representation in parliment.

As for BREXIT, it's not really a matter of democracy or otherwise that has created the present farce, it's the corrupt behaviour of the MP's and worst of all Bercow.

Adding insult to injury is that Westminster refuse to accept that referendum should be legally binding.

That being said this government has rode roughshod over the will of the people with Theresa May and Bercow the very worst offenders.

Democracy in the UK?

In a pigs eye.

Re: Has Brexit destroyed democracy

Until 24 June 2016 we had some kind of democratic system, imperfect though it might have been
But yes, events since then have destroyed any semblance of that

Like 17,4 million people, and probably more I am now completely disillusioned, disgusted, and embittered by the performance of most of our MPs, of all parties
They have lost any kind of respect or credibility

I remember a comment by an American journalist - 'The problem with Democracy is that it relies on the losing side to respect the result'

I've just seen a comment on www.order-order.com

Knife crime is getting serious; 17.4 million people were stabbed in the back yesterday

Re: Has Brexit destroyed democracy

Democracy relies on people respecting the result what we have seen so far is losing side not doing that and that's what is or has destroyed democracy. If it had been left as it was voted for, and we had left with no complaints we wouldn't be in this mess today.

Re: Has Brexit destroyed democracy

Hi

I have lost all faith in our system

We had a free vote and we voted to leave, end of story.

We have ended up with 70 MPs making decisions about our future.

The ERG, the DUP and some of the Remainers.

They are not interested in us as ordinary voters at all, just their own agendas.

Re: Has Brexit destroyed democracy

Democracy is government in which THE PEOPLE, NOT THE ELITE, hold the ruling power either directly or through their elected representatives.

No, Brexit has not destroyed democracy.

But it has shown Brexit to be a God-awful waste of time.
