Free Trade Deals Signed

There have been a number of landmark trade deals signed in the past week.

Australia will sign a new agreement covering $18.8 billion in free trade with Hong Kong on Tuesday, as Labor prepares to officially back the Australia-Indonesia free trade deal if it wins government.

France has just signed a multi billion dollar deal with China. Overnight, Mr Xi also signed a multi-billion-dollar deal with French President Emmanuel Macron, however the French leader did not agree to sign onto the BRI.

Of some concern is that Italy has signed up to the Chinese Belt and Roads Initiative (BRI). Over the weekend, Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte became the first G7 leader to back and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) endorsing China's landmark multi-billion-dollar BRI plans.

Mr Conte resisted pressure from members of his own government, his allies in Europe and the United States to sign 31 agreements worth up to 20 billion Euros ($31.8 billion), according to Reuters.

While proponents of the initiative maintain that it is a positive step to open trade with the economic superpower, there still appears to be fears around the initiative itself and what it means for Western sovereignty and global security.

No that is Italy, our relationship with China is far more schizophrenic. They are our biggest trading partner by far and we love selling them stuff but we don't trust them at all.

In fact their BRI has forced us to start helping Pacific nations rather than let them fall under Chinese influence

Bruce matey I was uderstood to believe that countries within the EU were not allowed to make separate deals, that any deals had to be under the auspices of the EU. Both France and Italy are members of the EU - care to explain???

Joe, me old pal, me old beauty...

Absolutely no idea how you European weirdos do trade deals.

We are still trying to negotiate one with the EU, but have fallen out with Italy over their dodgy tinned tomatoes and Greece over something else (forget what). Perhaps these are not full blown free trade deals, the Italian one seems to be more about China bailing them out of debt.

Very interesting. thread Brucy,. good for Aussie if it happens
and it benifits you.
China has been operating in Africa now for decades, for obvious
reasons, looking at Africa today do you perceive any evidence
of benifits from these trade deals
I also, like UJ,question how France/ Germany and now Italy
can parade openly around the world making deals BUT UK is
bound by EU law not to do this
This Brucy old cobber, is just one of the reasons we are attempting
to leave
The fact that our establishment has made such a pig's ear FU
of the job, is our problem and l think it will take a bit longer,
as the POS. HOC are falling all over themselves again to steal
our once in a lifetime vote.
I hope you understand what is happening over here'
a bit better now

Best. Regards,. Donkeyman.
