French Fishermen Threaten to stop UK Exports

French Fishermen threatened to block British exports to the EU in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Macron had better have a word with them toot sweet and make sure his fishermen follow international law before allowing blockades, as if they do carry out their threat to prevent any fish caught by British fishermen from ever being sold on the Continent, surely they will just be cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Just think how many French processors and jobs that could be lost? The UK is already looking at expanding their non-EU markets and threats like this will just accelerate that quest.
French fishermen may well threaten to beat their chests, but the biggest losers will be French processing jobs.

Is that what they want?

There is a simple solution. Incorporate them in your UK-USA deal. You get the chicken, they get the fish.

Hi

Unfortunately not SG.

The system does not work like that.

We export huge volumes of fresh shell fish to the EU, worth a mint.

Travel distance to other markets means frozen, a fraction of the price.

They are on a winner and they know it.

A No Deal means no Quota allowance, the Norwegians already have that and they will not be giving it up.

A simple fact of life, the vast majority of fish caught in UK Waters is not those that we eat, the EU Nations do.

We do not eat herring, mackerel, sprats, pilchard, dabs, megrim and the rest in vast quantities, the EU Countries do.

We farm a lot of Salmon. when Tariffs are introduced the Norwegians will take over. they are Tariff Free.

Re: French Fishermen Threaten to stop UK Exports

Swimmy, I understand that fish caught in British waters is not to the British palate, but that surely does not give French fishermen the right to threaten us! Surely we have the right to OWN our own waters and decide who is allowed to fish in those waters. I don't recall anyone saying that EU member states will not be allowed to fish here, only that the rules will change so that we are not disadvantaged ourselves with quotas, as has been the case with the present iniquitous CFP.

We have already put up with French fishermen breaking the law with their harassment of British scallop fishing boats in their waters, now they are already trying to lay down the law dictating to us how things should be in our OWN waters.

That really takes the biscuit.

France and other EU states will take the view that, because their fishermen have legally fished in UK waters for decades, custom and practice allows them to continue. Indeed the concept of custom and practice does feature in the law of the sea.

The UK will argue that, without an agreement, continental European fishermen cannot fish in UK waters – and that too is featured in international law.

France and others are likely to counter by claiming that their fishermen are entitled to fish in UK waters if there is a surplus of fish, which there certainly would be, given the relatively small size of the UK fishing fleet and given what will almost certainly be its reduced ability to sell its fish to its neighbours. The concept is touched upon in Unclos.

The UK government has promised that Brexit will give Britain back control of its waters – but, in the absence of a deal, Professor Barnes thinks that that “may well be, in practical terms, an undeliverable promise”.

1 lor,ry, filled with 219(!) lambs. But diesel fumes do spoil the taste of mutton.

In an apparent revenge attack in Britain Friday, three men clubbed a French trucker, fracturing his skull.
