York.

YORK

Many have left their footprints
in and around this lovely city.
Saxon; Viking; Roman;
scratch any surface
and her history bleeds out.
A rich panoply of cultures
and designs; the elegant facade
of Georgian town house
nestling beside Victorian
red brick solidarity;
angular Art Deco, nineteen
fifties frightfulness, and
the towering gothic cathedral
standing guardian over all.
There are other areas - dark,
sinister places where you
would not want to venture,
but even they hold
a strange kind of beauty.
The graffiti artists tags, the
eyeless windows of abandoned
shops, the skeletons of
derelict, unloved houses
and the rusted metal sculpture
of the burned out car.
All have something to
contribute to the living
history that is York and,
through it all, her twin rivers
Ouse and Foss meet, touch,
and flow timelessly onward.

Re: York.

Hi

York is stunning, I love it.

I will be up there soon, not far away, a couple of hours driving.

I am a volunteer with Mind, a Mental Health Charity.

One of those I help has moved there, I have her stuff in storage , I will be delivering it to her as soon as she is discharged and has a place to call her own.

That's excellent, ST.

The one slight alteration I'd make is to substitute 'Angles' for 'Saxons'. Sorry if I'm being a little pedantic.

A beautifully-written prose, Tabby, of a lovely city.
You hit it right on the button there, York is a superb place.
Must visit again very soon.

Re: York.

A flowing, thoughtful poem. I love your affection for the place that comes through all the realism. Nicely done!

Re: York.

JBR - LOL - nothing like a little early morning pedantry to kick start my day. I was taught that Saxons were part of York's history - albeit a small part.

Under the Saxons the city was renamed Eoferwic, and it became the capitol of the Saxon kingdom of Deirwa. The Saxons seem to have settled into Roman York without changing the city overmuch. They used the Roman grid pattern of streets and refortified the walls. In the year 627 the Christian princess Ethelburga of Kent came north to marry Edwin, King of Northumbria. Edwin was convinced to convert to Christianity, and he and his court were baptised by Bishop Paulinus in a church especially constructed for the purpose at a local holy well. This rude wooden church, of which nothing remains, is regarded as the first York Minster.
Saxons are people from Saxony, in modern-day Germany. The Anglo-Saxons were the peoples who invaded / settled in the south and east of Britain in the years following the withdrawal of the Roman Legions.
The Anglo-Saxons were a group of farmer-warriors who lived in Britain thousands of years ago. Made up of three tribes who came over from Europe, they were called the Angle, Saxon, and Jute tribes. The two largest were the Angle and Saxon, which is how we've come to know them as the Anglo-Saxons today.

Re: York.

So, Edwin was responsible for the first Burga-King in York.
