Are you wearing a face mask and if so why?

Lately I have been seeing short video clips done by the BBC, WHO, the NHS and other medical specialists with advice to the public on the need to wear a face mask. They basically all say the same thing which is unless you are ill (the mask prevents the spread of your germs when you cough or sneeze), you do not need to wear one because the virus is not an airborne virus but a human to human transfer virus.

If that is the case then why is there such a whoharr about the NHS needing face masks? If a patient coughs or sneezes, a face mask is not going to protect the NHS worker, only a full face respirator will do that.

At the moment we constantly see pictures of many of people involved in helping the NHS wearing face masks. Therefore, if the advice being given to the public is to not wear a face mask due to how the virus is transmitted, why are all those involved in helping the NHS and the NHS themselves wearing face masks..i just don't get it. There must be something I am not understanding here.

Maybe it's to do with viral load:

https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/e...nd-viral-load/

Prof Wendy Barclay, Action Medical Research Chair Virology, and Head of Department of Infectious Disease, Imperial College London, said:

“In general with respiratory viruses, the outcome of infection – whether you get severely ill or only get a mild cold – can sometimes be determined by how much virus actually got into your body and started the infection off. It’s all about the size of the armies on each side of the battle, a very large virus army is difficult for our immune systems army to fight off.

So standing further away from someone when they breathe or cough out virus likely means fewer virus particles reach you and then you get infected with a lower dose and get less ill. Doctors who have to get very close to patients to take samples from them or to intubate them are at higher risk so need to wear masks."

Hah. Very true Meg.

Thing is, wearing a face mask is not going to protect you from picking up bacteria from supermarket trolleys is it!

Same with all the till cashiers wearing gloves.
Unless they change them between every customer, it is no different to having dirty hands.
You can still touch your face with gloves on and you won't be protected!

Hi

I have worn a facemask for years.

Simply because I am so ugly.

No, they said they don't work, so no point, unless you have the proper medical ones. They will be better as they cover the face properly.

Has anyone mentioned that the actual food packets could be passing it on too, so many are plastic?

Funny you should say that ... at the queue at Asda I saw more than one person wipe their trolley handle with an anti-bacterial wipe.
I never thought of taking one so just held the handle with a tissue which I binned after leaving the shop.

I only saw one face mask. No one seems to be bothering with them.
