Future population – what is going on?

"The world is ill-prepared for the global crash in children being born which is set to have a "jaw-dropping" impact on societies, say researchers.

Falling fertility rates mean nearly every country could have shrinking populations by the end of the century.

And 23 nations - including Spain and Japan - are expected to see their populations halve by 2100."

An interesting read I thought. This may be the way over-population of the world will be reduced. However, there will be downsides to this which could be the opposite of what would be expected. Some of the possible downsides, if this does actually happen, are given in the above link.

What are your comments on this?

My opinion we need LESS people .

Unfortunately it is the birth rate among educated thinking people that is falling .

The drones and religious nutters will keep on reproducing themselves .

Re: Future population – what is going on?

Very interesting subject Baz!
But it all comes down to the fact that theplanet is finite, and has
limits on how much waste and pollution it can process.
We appear to be very close to those limits at the present moment
as can be seen from the physical changes going on such as
deforestation, reduction of ice caps leading to oceanic changes,
which in turn can alter the oceans ability to manufacture oxygen
and so support life all over the planet etc! etc!
Most of these changes imo are part of a natural cycle over large
periods of time, and so we can only mitigate them slightly by our
own actions, which includes having less people to put excessive
loads on the natural system?
So short term it can only be good for there to be less people?
But ultimately we are stuck on this rock untill it either becomes
uninhabitable or the cycle reverses its self for whatever reason??
The statistics you posted can only be good for the planet!
How we cope with them is up to us
Who knows, corona may yet solve the aged population problem
for us??

Donkeyman! 👍👍😁😁😁👍👍

That's how I see it too.

I don't think we have any worries about our population falling any time soon. In fact, it is definitely rising.

When I was a youngster I remember reading that the UK population was around 50 million. Apparently, it is now 65 million, and rising - thanks to our new arrivals who do us the favour of bolstering our numbers regularly every week!

The only drawback is that we are morphing from an Anglo-Saxon-Norman society into an African-Middle-Eastern society.

I'm sure that there can't have been a more rapid change in our societal make-up for the last thousand years.

You seem to know your stuff, maybe you can kindly help me. A friend of mine is a Dr. of Physics, a very intelligent man. I once asked him how he can be a man of Physics and still believe in god.

He replied that if you cannot yet prove everything in Physics, it is still okay to at least believe in something.

Now my question for you: do I have to put him in the "drones" or in the "religious nutters" drawer?

Years ago I had to to with a computer simulation of biological growth and I had to read a bit in to that topic.

I found in the literature that in a closed system the birth rate has the shape of a sigma. The population growth rate starts slowly then becomes exponential and at the end it becomes zero and finally falls below zero.

That is the moment when - in a closed system - the residues and remains of the population becomes toxic and starts killing the organisms.

I am not a biologist but I see an analogy to our closed system earth. All our damage of resources, the waste, the plastic, the air pollution become toxic for us and population will finally shrink.
