100% Solar Power

South Australia's renewable energy boom has achieved a global milestone.

The state once known for not having enough power has become the first major jurisdiction in the world to be powered entirely by solar energy.

For just over an hour on Sunday, October 11, 100 per cent of energy demand was provided by solar panels alone.

Any excess power generated by gas and wind farms on that day was stored in batteries or exported to Victoria via the interconnector.

Great, Bruce!

We, in the UK, might give it a go over the next couple of days.

We'll try it where the sun don't shine!

Not bad, Bruce. But bear in mind it was just one hour. And no solar after daylight.

Don't forget SA has the biggest battery in the world installed by Mr Musk himself. It may have only been for one hour but it is still a first which was the point, from acorns grow mighty oaks.

Solar is causing a lot of network problems as I have mentioned elsewhere. Suppliers in Victoria are campaigning for the ability to turn off household solar (strongly resisted by consumers)

The state has a population of about 1.8million, 80% of them live in Adelaide. Those figures are from memory but roughly right

Not so good after all Bruce....

The ugly side of solar panels
New research shows, albeit unintentional, that generating electricity with solar panels can also be a very bad idea. In some cases, producing electricity by solar panels releases more greenhouse gases than producing electricity by gas or even coal.

Elon Musk
"The dedicated battery farm can power 30,000 homes for up to an hour, which relieves the burden on the grid during hot summer days when failure is most likely."

Have you seen the mess that Lithium mining makes on the landscape and to the livelihoods of the locals. It's not so bad though because it's mainly done in South America.
