Bmi

BMI is being slated now, because its measure is bad for some folks self esteem, what about folks Health Esteem?

Health before Self, should that be a motto for putting things into perspective?

Re: Bmi

I have never really believed in BMI - its Textbook guidance and doesn't take into account an individuals natural body. Going by their measurements I should be under 7 stone, but I'm not. I did get there once but it wasn't at healthy for me - I looked really ill and had no energy.

Re: Bmi

Another issue is that BMI doesn't take account of the fact that muscle weighs more than fat. So someone who regularly works out, and is fit as a flee, could have the same BMI as someone who is the same weight, but never exercises and is nothing but flab.

It's not something I have ever shown interest in. At 6' 6" I was 220lbs at 21 and some 50+ yrs later I still weigh in at around 220lbs so I must be doing something right. To me, BMI etc is just a box ticking exercise undertaken by doctors etc to boost their income and has very little to do with their patients.

Re: Bmi

BMI is just an average guide and nothing more, but personally I think it worth trying to keep within the parameters if possible. My BMI at the moment is 25.3, so I'm going to try and lose four or five more pounds as I've got a bit of a "spare tyre" anyway, which I really ought to lose.

Exactly Barry, keep an eye on it for health and mobility, not for ego.

Re: Bmi

BMI does not seem to take into account that as we age our metabolism slows so it's easier to put on weight. Also as we age our height reduces so the height to weight ratio used for assessing BMI will probably be inaccurate.

Re: Bmi

Folks ain't complaining about the validity or accuracy of the ratings, they are complaining about being stigmatised by a number.
