No TV, no radio, no contact with any other prisoners and only one hour/day in a small private exercise pen. Only 2 showers/week, shaving once/week.
Many prisoners in a super-max finally go insane.
I agree. Taking away someone's freedom for life can be far worse than taking away their life. It also means that society doesn't have blood on its hands.

Personally, I think the final decision should be left to the families of the victims. A secret ballot could be organised and the outcome honoured.

Justice is blindfolded for a reason. Revenge is not part of justice.

do we even have those kind of prisons? I've never heard of one here in the UK. I think if prisons were like this maybe we would have less offenders, our prisons are far too soft, TVs, Good food, roof over head, kept warm, play computer games, snooker/pool, I think I heard they are even allowed phones now but don't quote me on that, it may be wrong.

Hear what you're saying. The problem is that, sadly all too often, justice doesn't seem to be part of justice either.

I don't. You have to separate emotions from the decision to end someone's life or not. It has to be a rational decision made by those not involved. Otherwise we go back to mob rule. Maybe satisfying for some but like stoning and eye for an eye it's also primitive justice which has no place in a civilised society. "Lord of the Flies" etc...

100% agree. Justice is rational and neutral. Our nature when wounded is to bay for blood. But justice has to see both sides.

Strangely enough we rarely have the kind of vicious, violent murders that they carry out in the US. I wonder whether one is connected with the other?

I didn't realise prisoners here were allowed mobile phones. Perhaps in open prisons or detention centres.

Please note that I am referring specifically to the scenarios put forward in the last few posts, ie to choosing between someone being banged up in the max security cells for full life (ie they will never ever be released) versus a death sentence. In both cases the perpetrator will never have any further contact with anyone at all. It is then a matter for the victim's family to decide which of the two they feel most comfortable with...permanent mental torture for the murderer/terrorist, or a sense of immediate closure.

What if he /she has killed the whole family? Who decides then?
