Familiarity is fine if you don’t mind sharing your life

Same here, as it can and has caused problems in my life...I like to keep my distance, which works for me.

On saying that I do have one close friend, where we are extremely tuned in to each other.

We aren’t stuck like glue though....I don’t like that..I find it suffocating.

I’m talking from experience.

With my son, that’s different...
IMO I think it is important to be sure of your ground before becoming familiar with folks, but it depends on what is actually meant by "familiar" Perhaps a further explanation would be useful.

To me it is important to feel comfortable with folks and I will try to find a happy balance. If I don't feel a degree of comfort I do not engage. Takes a bit of time and you have to want to be bothered. Once I get to know someone a bit it is easy not to become too familiar. The boundaries seem to be naturally set by both sides. Can always back off or move forward a bit as the situation/relationship progresses (even if on a superficial level as on a forum). If you know what I mean.

Yes, I agree, well said!....makes perfect sense...you also took your time I believe in thinking that out.

That for me was an insightful post.

Re: Don’t get

I've always been an absolute sucker for this.

Been burnt a few times, and I've actually been burgled three times!

However, I believe I'm still well ahead. If I had not been so freely available throughout my life, then I doubt that I would have had half of the fun that I've had!
