Interestingly the amount of unemployment benefit is actually very low at £3bn and of the total budget this is overshadowed by the amount paid out in benefits to those in work, because the likes of Tescos et al do not pay their staff sufficient amounts, their living costs have to be topped up by benefits. I do think this was the motivation behind the living wage and hopefully will reduce this figure.

I'm always quietly amazed when people drag in the cost of Pensions... without thinking it through.
How many Pensioners are actually fit for work? By then most people either have some chronic health condition or some limiting illness.
I rather think the figure for Incapacity, disability & injury benefits would rocket.
