Re: It's -7 outside bad for rough sleepers

In '63 in Bristol myself and a buddy were trying to sleep in a lorry cab...no heaters in those days.
Local plod escorted us to the nick where we slept in a cell overnight....lucky we did, that night it hit minus 17

I don't see the problem, really. As a rough sleeper in the 90s I never had any issue with the cold. I would try and get indoors but if not there were always heating vents available to sleep on. This was in Worcester and Birmingham.

Most people are homeless through life choices; I know I was. I wouldn't like to be my age sleeping out but people have options.

N.B. I was homeless for around 10 years.
May we ask why you choose to be a rough sleeper?

It's terribly cold.
The councils here in Wiltshire and Gloucestershire are preparing hundreds of beds for rough sleepers .
If they are out tonight they are in danger of freezing to death.
loads and loads in central London - heartbreaking.

did hear they wil be opening up more places with this cold .
but more is never enough - buildings that stay empty could make into rooms for them ' terrible thing to be homeless ' i would not survive a hour in it Brrrrrrrrrr...most is through desperation than choice ...

I think you've got your pronouns mixed up but I'll answer anyway. I chose to as I had mental health issues at the time and did no longer want to stay in the environment that created them.

But I did choose. Today I live in a 300K house and have my own business - I chose that, too. People always have options.

Re: It's -7 outside bad for rough sleepers

Thank you for answering my question yes I am careless speller and my ipads auto correct doesn't t help
Its good to hear that you overcame your problems and have done so well.
However I feel that perhaps many homeless people have mental issues they cannot overcome or have drug addiction problems or are just lifes unfortunates .
Perhaps one time they had a different life .
there but for fortune ......

Several councils in the UK are fining Homeless people £100 for rough sleeping, if not paid its increased to £1000, not all areas help.

I was shocked recently to see so many homeless people in Leeds. We were staying at a Travelodge and there's an underpass near it where there were literally dozens of these poor people sleeping rough. Lord knows how they survive in this weather.

Re: It's -7 outside bad for rough sleepers

A dozen churches near Bristol City Centre, the Bristol Churches Winter Night Shelter Project, which was piloted last year, are opening their doors to those sleeping on the streets.

I hope further shelters will be opened to accommodate the homeless on the streets during these cold winter months
