There must have been half a dozen in our local woods over the last two weeks, last year we only heard one I think, but as you say Meg always a joy to hear them after the long winter days..
I was really surprised to hear the first cuckoo at the end of March! Normally it's mid April before the first one appears, but this year I think it must be due to our having a very mild winter.
Tricky blighters to get a photo of, only managed it once. Used to see them at regular sites, but cant get there now so i need one to turn up on passage at my coastal patch.
I have just been to Dartmoor for a few days - heard a couple calling to each other and saw one fly overhead. I haven't heard one for a couple of years.
