shocking religious beliefs

I'm not posting this thread to start a war. I'm posting it to ask if anyone has heard a religious quote from a priest, minister or the likes, which has shocked you. I'm not posting to talk about which religion is better than the other. Just about shocking facts.

My mum was a catholic and met my dad, a son of staunch protestants. They decided to get married, but as my dad wouldn't have changed his religion they got married in the minister's manse.

One of the most shocking things that I have ever heard of that a priest of the church said was to my mum when she went to tell the priest she was getting married to a protestant. The priest told her "you realise that when your husband dies, he'll die in the arms of God, but you will now die alone". I was absolutely horrified when my mum told me this. She was told that she was no longer welcome in the catholic church and that communion was out of the question. You couldn't meet such a lovely, caring, sensitive woman.

How dare he.

Another example of religious hatred. People are not born to think like this, they are made to think like this.

Re: shocking religious beliefs

We were talking about it again the other day with friends and they were all infuriated by it. Why would someone of the church say something so absolutely nasty? I could've cried when my mum told me and was tempted to write to the church at that time, but decided to let it go. For all the good it would have done.

People need to speak up when they disagree with their clergy, it's one of the great things about some religions how we are encouraged to question and find the answers for ourselves, and why I don't like some of the organised religions.

I find the whole subject of heaven & hell difficult to digest.
Why would a God of love permit such a place as hell to exist?

My grandmother had a pragmatic view in her nineties and was fond of saying...........

"I don't care which way I go, up or down for I am sure to know lots of people in both places"

Have you got this the right way around Alice? It doesn't sound right. no offence intended I've probably got it wrong as usual.

Oops, it's probably how I've worded it. The priest said to my mother that she would not now die in the arms of god because she was marrying someone outside the catholic church. Whereas her husband would because he is marrying in his own church/or by a minister. Hope this explains it!

Being religious does not mean you are a kind person.

It certainly does not. Infact, it can be the complete opposite.

That's because you are thinking of them as places when heaven is (according to my Faith) being close to our God (no body just some sort of energy we think) and hell is simply absence of God so you would be unable to be close to God, but repentance will give you another chance. No one is banished forever and if they are it isn't hellfire and brimstone.
