Rob's Rhymes

Inspired by my first day at Torquay Boy's Grammar School ...

With my cap on my head and my satchel in hand
I set off one day for a strange foreign land
No more for me my comfy first school
I was off to a place where REAL learning did rule

My old junior school was just down the road
Perhaps half a mile from my parent's abode
Where once I could walk there without any fuss
now the journey, for me, was by bike or by bus

That first day of 'big' school I remember so well
Standing outside to wait for the bell
They herded us first years into a big hall
where we stood looking lost to await the roll call

One after another they sorted us out
I hadn't a clue what 'twas all about
Into our classrooms we were all led
where, for our teacher, we waited in dread

At last he arrived dressed in mortar and gown
No smile on his face, just a very stern frown
'Alright you boys', he said with a sneer
'My name is Joslin, I'm your form master this year'

He looked like a skeleton, thin and quite tall
No sense of humour did he have at all
Jack Joslin his name, but known as 'The Ripper'
His weapon of choice was a well worn gym slipper

Re: Rob's Rhymes

Thanks Mags, I've got quite a few that I've written over the last few years since retiring. Up until then I had never even considered writing rhymes but I quite enjoy it now. All sorts of subjects, serious and silly. I'll dig out some more.

GOTHIC

Demons of the night
Sometimes they take flight
Those demons in my mind
I thought I'd left behind

Vampiric forces at the door
The dreams I dream are full of gore
Devils scream and prance about
I cannot see, I cannot shout

Outside the moon is full and bright
Werewolves stalk the darkest night
A force I do not understand
Tries to take me by the hand

I back away, I am afraid
It's my soul it wants to raid
Mesmeric thoughts they do command
I must resist else I am damned

Before me I now see the pit
I know I must not enter it
Evil forces drag me on
I know that soon I will be gone

But wait! I see at edge of night
A tiny speck of pure white light
Is this salvation who can tell
I know I must no longer dwell

I stagger back towards the light
I must resist with all my might
I hope that things may all be well
And I'll not have to burn in hell

The light becomes a silver ball
And now I'm not afraid at all
My soul it seems to have grown wings
"Am I saved?", my heart it sings

The silver light surrounds me now
I am back, I know not how
I wake to find that I'm in bed
No longer filled with awful dread

A dream then, this just had to be
I knew that it had frightened me
But wait! What is this in the hall
A tiny, silver, glittering ball ................

OBSERVATIONS FROM A HILL

I sat upon a hill one day
The blue horizon far away
In the distance haze and smoke
Saw sheep in fields but no folk

Up above a buzzard flew
soaring as the breeze, it blew
Nowhere were there houses built
just little fields, a patchwork quilt

Not a single sign of man
been like this since time began
At my feet were rabbit droppings
hidden by the stone outcroppings

I sat there overcome with bliss
Why can't the whole world be like this
No sign of trouble nor of strife
It would have been a pleasant life

But then I looked up to the sky
and saw man's works written high
A scratch upon the perfect blue
White trails caused by jets that flew

Is there any place on Earth
that's as it was before Man's birth
Sad to say, I think there's not
'Coz every-bloody-where we've got
