Lard or Oil ?

What do you cook your roast tatties in - oil or lard ?
They are now saying oil is only good for us - cold - not heated and that lard is the healthy option for hot cooking .......

Re: Lard or Oil ?

We have used olive oil for all our cooking needs for a couple of years but the price of it is shooting up now, owing to a bad harvest apparently....

Re: Lard or Oil ?

Yep Smoke point of oils is important to note. Using oils with low smoke points will likely result in you creating harmful toxic compounds. Not what we want.

For hot cooking purposes (like frying, oven roasting etc) you need an oil with smoke point over 240 deg C ideally. There are not too many of these.

Avocado oil is a good one but not readily available.

The best option in the UK is likely Rice Bran Oil. I only use this for cooking. It is often on offer in shops and when it is I simply stock up on it.

Olive oil has a smoke point in the range 160-200 so really not that suitable.

List of Oil Smoke Points here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoke_point

My choice of oils in total is as follows:

Cooking - Rice Bran Oil

Baking - Coconut Oil (much healthier than other oils and butter)

Salad dressings - Good Hemp Oil

I occasionally use various olive oils for cold applications such as sprinkling on home baked ciabatta and so on.

'They' change their minds about what is or is not healthy quicker than they change their socks!

I use Rapeseed High/Refined oil. It tastes OK, it suits my digestion and it cooks well. What more could I ask?

I normally use rape seed oil. But I fry my eggs in butter. Naughty but nice.

Re: Lard or Oil ?

Vegetable or sunflower oil only ones we can all tolerate, we are a right itchy bunch if I use olive oil or rapeseed oil, and I don't like the idea of lard (being a veggie).
