Candle
Years ago, in a Yorkshire farmhouse miles from anywhere, the old farmer lay dying. Electricity, gas and other services had yet to extend this far from civilisation, and the farmer and his wife led a very simple, yet happy, life.
The farmer's last request of his wife of many years was to let him have a lit candle in his room over his last few hours.
The wife, being well aware of the high cost of candles, was unsure of whether to allow such expense but finally, after much thought, she relented.
As she lit the candle, now placed at his bedside, she whispered lovingly: "There, luv... but if thi should feel thissen slippin' off, try to blow it out."
