Why do people believe in gods?

There is no evidence any god worshipped by humans exists. I am only familiar with the god of the Bible having been unfortunate enough to have religious parents. It appears to be a completely human invention with all the worst of human characteristics. The stories attributed to it and its 'son' are just not credible, anymore than characters in fairy tales are credible.

Maybe their upbringing ?
I cannot say whether HE exists but its a shame so many live their lives solely by a book
Faith however - is a wonderful thing

Re: Why do people believe in gods?

Well belief in higher beings seem to be a human trait extending way back into pre history, currently about 4000 religions apparently, so part of the human condition as is the right not to believe.

People are generally indoctrinated from birth with religion, and if you are told something is true often enough I guess it is hard ever to disbelieve it, even when your intelligence tells you it is completely ridiculous.

Why do people believe in gods?

Indoctrination from an early age.
... reluctance to questioning those who appear to be more knowledgeable than oneself,
...tradition,
...fear of the unknown,
...a desire to retain comforting thoughts.

Re: Why do people believe in gods?

Some people see it as a means of getting something after death and/or some sort of moral code - which it isn't. Some people cannot grasp or refuse to believe in reality and reasoning and turn to religion for quick answers. Usually religion succeeds where education fails.

People are not born religious, they are made so - which to me, can be immoral, wrong and in some cases tantamount to child abuse/brainwashing.

There again, people see religion a very easy means of making tax free money with false promises of reward based on faith-derived donations.

Religion was the foundation for early policing, living by a set of rules.
I for one am thankful for that, it spurred us on to conformity.

Hi

Why shouldn't people believe in God?

They have as much right to believe in a God as those who choose not to.

Tpin also has a point about rules to live by.

If you take the Bible, the Koran and the Torah they all have one thing in common, they are all very good Public Health Handbooks.

You cannot prove or disprove the existence of God.

You either believe or you don't.

Re: Why do people believe in gods?

Most educated people don't. They use it as an excuse to justify what they want to do.
