I know its not much but its all I could afford to pay.

Well, I am a vegetarian so I'll take turnip shephard. I don't know why they need herding, why a turnip would suddenly want to run off, or who would be there to swipe one away, but....

There is a logic to this.

Sheep are brought down off the mountains to lamb on the lowlands.

It is very commonplace with Welsh sheep being brought here every year to lamb.

They are fed stubble turnips, 3 acres of stubble turnips will feed 100 sheep for a month.

The turnip shepherds are those who lamb them during this time it is a useful bit of extra income for the farms.

My Ex MIL used to take 100 ewes a year on her small farm when husband was alive and wanted me to continue with it.

No way when you have a job and are trying to cram the farm work in as well.

Lambing is exhausting.

My grandmother was listed on the census as a Lift Paster in the early 1900's. I believe this was as a homeworker for the shoe industry in Northampton.
