Re: Retirement

Thanks Jimmy and Rena. I look at houses on Rightmove but until I have an offer on mine I am not looking seriously as estate agents won't accept offers until you are in a position to proceed. I am going up there first week of March though and am making a list of bungalows I would be interested in viewing to have a look at where they are in case I like one residential area more than another. At the moment I really only know the town centre. It all very exciting for me at the moment and I just want the next few months to go quickly !

Re: Retirement

Sounds like a really exciting time for you, and that you have a sensible plan to get integrated into a community. I wish you well!

Re: Retirement

Dont worry about not being a wage slave and getting your freedom back.
No one ever said on their death bed they wish they spent more time at work.
You will be surprised how busy you will actually be when you stop working.
All those walks to go on, photos to take, hobbies to do friends to see.

Regarding money it has been said "thrifty till fifty then spend to the end"

I wonder if they said that when you could only expect to live 10-20 years past 50? Nowadays with life expectancy increasing perhaps "thrifty until 80 then spend to the end" might be more prudent!!

I've never heard that before but it is certainly my motto, except perhaps changing the fifty to sixty. My super will last until I am in my eighties, that will do me, thereafter I can bludge off the state.

As you say no one ever asked to see their bank statement on their death bed. The only problem is what to spent it on? I buy a new car every few years but apart from that what do I need? Most of my money goes on travel but again there is a limit with my other commitments how many months of the year I can devote to that.

I sometimes reflect on the difference in my life now compared to when I was struggling to buy my first house, or reading books like "Europe on a $1 a day". There are a few benefits to growing old (not many though)

This one generally relates to what I call 'The Briefcase Brigade'
