Re: Best Drummer Ever

The name Buddy Rich sticks in the memory because my late father was a drummer in his spare time and enthused about him. I can't remember ever seeing Buddy Rich play (on TV) but, as a wee thing, I was outraged when Dad poo pooed Sandy Nelson and declared him useless lol !

In my youth I though Ginger Baker was pretty good but wow that Buddy Rich video is truly amazing

Thank you Wishbone

Ooo I was also impressed by Eric Delaney who played timpani (kettle drums) .... hmmmm not sure what Dad thought about that and I lament that Dad's not around to give me an educated opinion on the drumming in Whiplash.

Naaaah!! Sandy Wilson was a good drummer in the same way that Duane Eddy was a good guitarist.............ie not at all!
The best drummer I have ever seen or heard by a country mile is the great Ginger Baker - totally awesome. Mind you it helped him that in Cream, he was playing with arguably the best bass player and best (blues/rock) guitarist in the world.

Yeah! Moonie was a much underrated drummer! His musical empathy with Entwhistle on bass was amazing.

What is a drummer?-Ginger Baker could play some very strange timings,Bonham was part of the sound that was Zeppelin. Keith Moon was a head banger. Back in the early-mid 60s the drummer was not given the notice they deserved so who knows what some from the past were capable of?

Ginger Baker was the exception - he could play anything in any style - much like the great Charlie Watts, whose main career has been in rock, but whose preferences lie in Jazz.
Bonham was limited but Moon could have been as good as Baker or Watts if he hadn't overindulged quite so much. In most rock bands, the sign of a good rhythm section is that you don't notice them - the relationship between drummer and bass player is key and the best rhythm sections are partnerships - Baker and Bruce, Moon and Entwhistle, Watts and Wyman, Fleetwood and McVie etc.
