Re: our infamous Redback spider

Yep right again Bruce, I often walk into them while mowing the lawn, the web is as tough as old boots, ( Aussie slang) but as you say they do a good job also when it comes to flies etc. Simmo

Tough as old boots is very English OS .

Have heard that the red back used to be a real hazard in the dunny!

Isnt there another one that is really deadly -funnel spider ?

Re: our infamous Redback spider

Hi Muddy, I seem to remember a song about a redback in the dunny,
Right again, they are a really mean one, you wouldn't want to get bitten by one of those fella's, we know them as a Funnel web spider, there is also a trapdoor spider as well ,just as lethal, this one has a little hole in the ground with a flap that lifts up when something on its menu passes by, it jumps out & grabs its prey & them drags it into its burrow & the flap drops down, all clever stuff.
The redback is our most common species.

Talking about these redbacks has given me a little job tomorrow morning, I must get the broom out & brush away all of the little nests on our fence.

Personally I never remove any spiders, for example there have been Redbacks living in my garage door for 30 years. Spiders do a lot more good than harm though Huntsmen have scared a few UK visitors yet they are pretty harmless. Certainly wouldn't clear them from a fence; all that will happen is that they will be replaced by cockroaches. I know which I prefer.

I lost one dog to, what was probably, a spider bite in all that time.
