I think ducks are better. When I bought this house over 30 years ago if you walked out at night all you could hear was the sound of snails crunching underfoot. My three ducks soon cleared them out to the point where I used to bring home slugs and snails as a treat for them.

(Not that we have hedgehogs here anyway)

That does sound a lot better than wasting good ale on slugs
