Isn't it just! You can't mention anything to do with illegal immigrants, over stayers or asylum seekers without being branded racist but the fact remains our health services are at breaking point - perhaps when we are all forced to buy health insurance to prop up the NHS people will change their tune!

Re: Illegal Immigrants

Perhaps Europe is looking at this the wrong way! Perhaps we in the richer countries should be trying to help the poorer countries sort out their problems. Help them to start businesses, tourism etc.

...or if that's not an option and their weather's better than ours, we could all move to their countries!

That's an excellent idea if only every time we try to help we didn't make such a pigs ear of it all leaving the countries worse off.

Ah, but it's usually us blundering into someone's dispute, not helping in a philanthropic, advisory capacity. Perhaps the EU should get a team together of successful business people and help them get started.

Funny, I thought Canada was the one being taken advantage of
by illegal immigrants.

So, could someone put me in the picture as to why, this is allowed to be the way of things for them and us. So much for the EU
I used to have a French tutor some time ago as I worked then for French company.
She actually came from Calais and she said that the immigrants at Sangatte caused major problems for the locals and the huge costs were badly affecting all services for the locals in the region.

That's the main reason it was closed in 2002, although by then the French Authorities had also found a highly organised infrastructure cashing-in on the immigrants arriving in the area, it being quite close to the Channel Tunnel.
As Pas de Calais was the stronghold of Jean-Marie Le Pen's Front National, (still is I think, under Marine), they have huge support locally.

The French government were highly embarrassed by this so under the pretext of "bowing to local pressure", the Camp was shut, the high security operation was scaled-down significantly and it got to the point where, even now, Police are suspected of turning a blind eye to much of the attempted stowaways and even those that find their way into the tunnel itself.

The French Government itself even denies there is a problem now and for them their isn't!

The main problem with all these immigrants is the fact that compared to where they've come from, the UK sounds like paradise and some truly believe the embellished picture that's painted of an idyllic life awaiting them in the United Kingdom and part with their life savings and risk their lives trying to get here.

That's the really sad part. stevmk2
