I can't see why anyone should complain at having an ID card, unless of course you're an illegal immigrant. Banks require ID, as do many other establishments. What's the problem with proving who you are?

Having an identity card makes sense to me, I have no problem with it.

Maybe the ones who will object to it are those who have something to hide

Re: A good start for NHS Funding

IDs are not only a good idea, but an essential these days.

As for NHS treatment, a long overdue step in the right direction, but with a couple of drawbacks:

What happens when a foreign visitor (without any health insurance or credit card) has an accident or is about to pop out a sprog? I can't imagine that they won't receive emergency treatment, but what then? Do they keep them locked up in the hospital until payment is forthcoming by some means?

Yes, unfortunately times have changed Meg, and ID cards have now become the best way forward.
Too many people are ready to take advantage, very sad really.

Re: A good start for NHS Funding

Was discussing this with my dentist this morning...all this talk of Identity Cards, Passports, Driving Licences... he's Greek by the way so ID doesn't bother him...but he pointed out, quite rightly, that when you register with the NHS you get an NHS card with your hnique NHS number.

So, why can't any receptionist or hospital go into a database, check your NHS number and see immediately who you are?

I suppose this would be too simple?

There is not a public health system on the planet which will satisfy everyone,
If one Googles looking for complaints about Australia's system, I'm sure you'd find heaps of whines.

However, I have found our Medicare, Bulk-billing, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme all work fantastically well.
I'm on a heap of medications - haven't paid a cracker for months.
Constantly reviewed by a world-renowned specialist after oral-cancer a few years ago .... costs me NOTHING.

Yanks and Poms just don't seem to be able to get their shit together.

Re: A good start for NHS Funding

I think one of the problems with the NHS is it started as a small thing with good intentions 'free to all at the point of delivery' and it offered quite simple treatments there were excellent at that time.

But that didn't take into account medical progression and modern technology and the poor old NHS just can't cope any longer with the huge demands and advances that keep us living much longer.

Something has to change, I know many won't like it but I think insurance at least for those in work (and scaled according to pay ) maybe one answer.
