Milk

Isn't it astonishing how quickly milk can 'turn'? I made a cup of tea about 7:30am and it was fine. Just been back to make another and there are nasty great globules of fat floating all over the top! Yuk!

Guess who will be making soda bread later on - meanwhile - I'll just open a fresh bottle of milk and make another cup of tea!

Re: Milk

I haven't had any problems we buy 4 pint cartons and put one in the freezer and one in the fridge lasts about 6-7 days, we run out before it turns. I insist it is always put back in the fridge though as a year or so ago a certain member of the family kept forgetting and then we wasted a bit.

Re: Milk

ST are you talking about supermarket milk in cartons?
On the odd occasion I have had to use it I find once opened it 'goes off' very quickly. I wonder sometimes if the 'best before' date is a true reflection of when it was bottled.

I use a local dairy for my milk which is delivered in glass bottles every other day and that stays fresh even when opened.

Re: Milk

There's too much messing around with milk today, all sorts of chemicals to keep it 'fresh' longer. I used to drink a lot of milk every day but now I only use it in coffee, I think Realist explained all about todays milk in a recent thread.

Heavens no, Meg! My semi skimmed comes in glass bottles delivered about 4:30am each day (except Sunday) by a lovely milkman.

Re: Milk

Well there is your problem ST when my husband was a milk man he often had milk go off before he could deliver it. They put crates on late night or very early morning then it sits on an unrefrigerated open back vehicle until it's delivered. The cows are milked earlier in the day so by time you get it it's over a day old and been at room or higher temperature for more than a day.

Supermarkets have strict temperature controls so it should keep a lot longer.

Even when he could get free milk we still got ours from the supermarket as paying for it was preferable to seeing it go bad.

Julie is right about that. But also, I have seen boxes and pallets of frozen food stood left standing about before it is packed away. I can always tell if stuff has started to defrost and been 're-frozen' because instead of free flow, is in a big solid lump.
If milk is left standing about the same, either by the shop, or even in our own cars before we get home, it's not surprising half the shelf life has expired before we get it in our own fridges.
