OAP homes for dogs

Another thing I just read:

"The world's first old-age home for dogs has been opened in Holland. Owner Cor Verhoek specialises in caring for the dogs of elderley couples who can't take their dogs with them when they move into an old people's home.
Dogs live in rooms with two or three baskets, complete with tables, chairs and even a t.v and a window overlooking their garden.
"We want these dogs to feel like they're in a proper home," said Cor from Rotterdam.

I so feel for these oldies who lose their home and family through no fault of their own. At a time of life when they don't ask for much, and perhaps need that extra bit of tlc themselves, they suddenly lose everyone they've ever known and are plunged into totally unfamiliar surroundings with no explanation whatsoever. I feel deeply sorry for these oldies.

What a nice idea and it must make the old people feel so much better knowing that their pets are being looked after .
My last two cats have both been oldies when I got them and I have previously adopted an eight year old dog . The oldies are fantastic and so often overlooked .

What I think is a pity that care homes don't have a kennels attached where elderly residents pets could live too.
The residents could visit their dogs and cats and a nice young person could have a job caring for them .
The problem is who can even afford care homes much less extras for animals?

Not sure about this. It may suit some but many old dogs have been the only pet, so could find it very traumatic to lose not only their owner but then being put among other dogs in unfamiliar surroundings.

I am thinking of my last dog who despite every effort made, would neither eat or drink for anyone but me, so would never survive something like this. Even with all the good intentions it's a big ask for an elderly pet

Re: OAP homes for dogs

I think you've got a point solo. One of mine won't go for a walk with anyone else but me, and doesn't like strange dogs round her either. She would not be happy at all in communal situation, even though she lives with 4 others at the moment. She's fine with the dogs she's grown up with, but would be very unhappy with strange dogs. She would be better off being PTS if anything happened to me, as I don't think she would ever settle elsewhere. Young Nellie however, would be in paradise and play from the minute her eyes opened in the mornings.
Maybe this oldies care place has facilities for dogs who prefer their own company, I would hope they are not forced to endure living with dogs they don't like.

Sometimes being put to sleep is the kindest option .
It's a horrible decision but the circle of life is one that comes to us all.

Re: OAP homes for dogs

I met a man with 2 beagles this morning,, his dogs greeted my old boy and he asked how old Benny was..

I told him 14 1/2 and he stroked Bennys head, noticed his unseeing eyes and asked if I had thought about putting Benny to sleep..

As an answer I unclipped his lead and as Benny set off tail wagging furiously I asked Why?
He watched for a moment then said.. oh my he really does enjoy life doesnt he?

Yes and thats what its all about, as long as the dog is enjoying life and not in pain I cant see any reason not to carry on.
Some people make snap judgements about age and disability without seeing the whole picture.
