Hibiscus

I'm trying to grow hibiscus but not looking happy, I assumed they didn't like the chalky soil so I dug them up and put them in pots with a decent compost, both perked up but now a few weeks later looking unhappy again.

Buds are falling off before flowering and leaves are curling.

Any ideas ? Their cousin laverta/mallow is doing fine quite happy and blooming well.

Re: Hibiscus

I've given up on them Julie, I don't know why but they never thrive for me.
I think they're a bit temperamental!

Re: Hibiscus

You may be right I haven't grown them before this is first try and it's not looking hopeful.

Re: Hibiscus

Hi Julie, It sounds like they are suffering from not having sufficient water to me, but have a look at this, it should help.

Ah on the ticket it said full sun so I have them in sunniest spot in the garden it looks like that is not right I will try moving them to partial sun spot and see how they do. I only water weekly too, as we are only there at the weekend I might have a word with our nearest neighbour and see if he can pop over the fence with his hose each day. He did say just ask !

Perhaps not the wisest choice of plants to buy for that environment where you can't keep an eye on them. I hope it's not too late to save them - fingers crossed.

Re: Hibiscus

Who ever only makes wisest choices with gardening we were told pots would suffer but we are having to move them off the decking as the plants have got so big we can't get past them and Elsie's tail whacks them on the way past.

Sweet peas no they said you need to dead head them daily, mine have gone mad I pick bunches each weekend never seen such prolific bloomers.

I am convinced much of its luck as much as anything.

Re: Hibiscus

If you must plant in containers it's best to use glazed pots if poss. So much moisture is lost through terracotta pots. Also stand them in trays if you can which will help conserve water on these very hot days. Watering daily is really necessary with very leafy plants as water is also lost through the leaves.
