I Brake For Squirrels!

Why do they do that? Almost every time I go out for a drive. A squirrel will run out in front of me giving himself plenty of time to get across the road but oh no! The little bugger will freeze in the middle of the road then turn and run back! Often this happens when another vehicle is coming in the opposite direction giving Sam or Samantha Squirrel no chance at all.

I'm told it's their natural way to avoid becoming lunch to their natural carnivorous enemies, the dashing to a fro gives them more chance of survival. Only problem is we travel in straight lines and are not chasing them so it gets a bit confusing after that.

I am in agreement, on two wheels the braking and swerving becomes somewhat more treacherous.

I know exactly what you mean EZ. I've seen just the same where I live.

I find pigeons frightening too, because they just sit there, assuming you won't hit 'em. They will only take off at the very last second.

Couple of years ago driving nicely along the road with my windows open, when a pigeon took off from the woods he didn't quite make it and I ended up struggling with feathered fool in my car. Could hardly see where I was going, was quite dangerous. Managed to stop safely dealt with extra passenger, and a little voice from the back of the car spoke up, can you do that again nanny giggles and hand clapping commenced.

Re: I Brake For Squirrels!

I get a lot of squirrels in my garden. They seem to disappear for the summer but autumn always sees them coming back again. I saw the first one return yesterday in fact.
I've had 3 at once running along the top of my fence before now, they go on my bird tables. My dogs go loopy when they dash along the fence.

I have just driven home from the fruit farm where I had to brake to avoid a pheasant and a flock of sheep.
It is all part of country life

That's nothing.
This morning I've had to brake for 3 white people, 2 black and 6 old fogey's.

Part of urban life I'm afraid
