An absolute disgrace treating their own citizens in this way. What's wrong with allowing a referendum? You never know, the result might have worked in Spain's favour but after this debacle I very much doubt it.

Isn't there a clause in the EU constitution somewhere banning countries from using violence against their own citizens?

The Spanish government says the referendum is illegal.

The police are trying to stop an illegal referendum, but why doesn't the government just let it happen then declare the result illegal ?

Using batons on grey haired old timers and females could harden the resolve of the moderates to join the call for independence.

As I understand it, the local Police where not considered reliable, being Catalans themselves.

The Spanish Government sent in the National Police.

Spain's Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said police had "acted with professionalism and in a proportionate way".

She cannot be serious, when firemen had to defend their own against Spanish state thugs.

Disgusting ! As someone said on the box tonight, had it been in one of the eastern block such as Hungary , the EU would have had plenty to say. A breach of one of the EU's main principles, and what do the West and Europe preach to the rest of the world ? Democracy and Peaceful talks..... what perfect example !
I can see the lid blowing off the EU soon.
