Favourite movie soundtracks
What are your favourite film soundtracks, music which is used to provide a film's score?
Naturally being a massive Pink Floyd fan, The Wall has a fantastic soundtrack. Obviously, it's a film that is based wholly on Roger Waters' vision and composition which created the original album, released in 1979. The movie is (more than) merely a film set to that classic album's music from start to finish (with a couple of additional tracks). The film featured the music as it appeared on the album without being re-recorded, although some pieces had Waters' or David Gilmour's vocals substituted for those sung by Bob Geldof to provide a more narrative style appertaining to his acting role within the film. Regardless of the limited score (Pink Floyd's music illustrated the whole of the film's music, no other artist was included), Alan Parker did a pretty decent job of interpreting the original theme to music, together with the amazing animation adapted from Gerald Scarfe's drawings.
As for movies which use a ‘various artists’ soundtrack, some of my favourites include (in alphabetical order):
An American Werewolf In London
The Blues Brothers
Dirty Dancing
Donnie Darko
Forrest Gump (probably my particular favourite as a varied soundtrack)
Good Morning Vietnam
Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels
Quadrophenia, Tommy
Road House
Saturday Night Fever
Any film by Martin Scorcese: Goodfellas, Casino, A Bronx Tale
Ditto Quentin Tarantino: Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds
Stand By Me
Trainspotting
Additionally, there are those movies which have their soundtrack more firmly rooted in an orchestral or classical guise:
The James Bond franchise
A Clockwork Orange
Highlander
Platoon
Rocky
Saving Private Ryan
The Godfather
Jaws
Star Wars
As TV series go, I’d pick the soundtrack to The Sopranos as my favourite.
